Fantastic January for the children
The first term at English World was immensely successful. In addition to the record number of children who signed up for our 16 courses (already increased to 17 for this new term), we had lots of special events: a competition for the children at the moment they signed up, in which they had to send us a photo of themselves with the Mary Poppins finger puppet we had given them, followed by two Skype connections with Irene Xantheas’s school in Athens. The first was with our secondary school children, who competed against the Greek students in a fun quiz about their respective countries, the second link up was to wish the Greek school a very happy Christmas. We were also happy to host the first ever Saturday afternoon Art Club at the school with a special guest, Lindsey from the U.S.A., to create Mexican masks; an entertaining Halloween pirate themed party and a raffle; a Christmas party equally appreciated together with the Christmas raffle.
It was also possible for the children to take our Mary Poppins doll around with them and on holiday. She visited London, the U.S.A. and various parts of Italy and can’t wait to start her adventures with you again. We also welcomed the extremely lovely Italian gymnast Lara Mori, who inspired our young people and helped them to understand that dreams can become true, qualifying shortly after her visit to us, for the Olympic games. If all that wasn’t enough our first creative workshop took place too: lots of children came to create wonderful snowflake-shaped frames, to hang on the school Christmas tree…..and here we are in January.
We have already hosted a Lion King themed children’s birthday party for Tommaso who wanted to celebrate his 5th birthday with us. It was a great success and 12 children had a great time playing with animals, learning their names in English, eating a delicious cake and creating lion masks. Two hours of entertainment and fun in English and everyone went home with a lovely present from us in addition to a great memory.
But we won’t be stopping there: we have got two great events planned this month. We are truly honoured to be able to welcome Zia Caterina, the taxi driver for little super heroes. This wonderful and colourful lady will be coming to the school on Wednesday 22nd January to speak to some of our secondary school children about the work that she does: making sick children happy. We will be collecting money to help her continue this work by selling books at the school reception. We hope that we can count on you to be able to make a good contribution to her cause.
The Saturday after, 25th January, it’s the turn of our second creative workshop. Inspired by the original Mary Poppins film we have chosen the scene and the song ‘Feed the Birds’ where the old lady feeds the birds in the square. Given that the winter months are extremely cold here, it is important to help our feathered friend by leaving them food and water. For this reason we have decided to create balls of seed to hang outside, and also to paint little bird houses that the children can take home as a souvenir. The workshop is open to children from 4 years old and will take place between 10 and 11 in the morning. We hope to see you there! Don’t forget, as always, it is necessary to book a place at the reception.
