Who are we?
The school of English World is managed with great passion and attention to detail by me Alison Salmon. I am both the director and one of the English teachers who work at the school. I was born on the outskirts of London where I worked for around 13 years as a graphic designer. Teaching had always interested me and for many years I ran and took part in a medieval re-enactment group which I founded in the 90s, where I often taught others medieval dancing, how to make costumes and many other necessary skills. It is no surprise with such a background that I now really enjoy representing the school on local television and presenting small programmes where I teach English through music, film and real life simulations.
During the 90s I came to Florence on a study tour while I was studying Tuscan 14th century Art History with the Open University. It was a holiday that changed my life and lead me to returning to university full time where I graduated in Art History, specializing in the Italian Renaissance. With my degree in hand, I arrived in San Giovanni Valdarno in the summer of 2005 to study the Italian language and to soak up the culture and it was then that I made the decision to move here. I have lived here since 2006 and after teaching for several years in the area I opened the doors to English World for the first time in 2010.
Since 2010 English World has continued to grow and has become both loved and respected by its more than 750 students past and present, for the quality and variety of lessons, the professionalism, friendliness and availability of its staff and its results in helping an enormous number of people to finally master this fundamental language and change or improve their lives and experiences at work and on holiday.
